THE SÃO TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE LANDROVER

This website is dedicated to the Landrovers found in the African country of São Tomé e Príncipe. São Tomé e Príncipe is an ex-Portuguese colony which gained independence in 1975. It is comprised of two islands lying approximately 250 km west of the African continent in the Gulf of Guinea. São Tomé, with its southern tip traversed by the Equator is the larger island (approx. 857 sq. km) whilst Príncipe lies 146 km to the northeast and has an area of 139 sq. km. The islands are volcanic in origin rising to 2024 m on São Tomé and 945 m on Príncipe. In colonial times the Portuguese destroyed much of the original forest to plant cocoa and coffee plantations.

Today offroading opportunities abound on the old plantation tracks that cover the islands, many of which have been abandoned and have become densely overgrown. 4WD vehicles abound - most are shiny new Nissan Patrols, Toyota Landcruisers and Hiluxes, Mitsubishi Pajeros and the ubiquitous Suzukis. But amongst these staples of politicians, bureaucrats and aid organisations, some classics are to be found - old style first generation Toyota Landcruisers working as taxis, Willys Jeeps and, of course, the Landrover.

This page aims to show you some of the Landrovers that have found their way to this remote tropical island paradise, as well as some of the marvellous scenery and offroading opportunities to be found here. Right now a new page with not much to show, we hope that it will grow over time and take an honourable place in the international community of Landrover websites. Below our first offerings ...
